Gardening as a link to our past

It is safe to assume that your ancestors were expert gardeners; otherwise, you wouldn't be here, right? Gardens have been central to human existence since, well, the beginning of time. Were your parents gardeners or your grandparents? Maybe you have to go back even farther to find gardeners in your family tree, but they're there.

For many of us, gardening is a way to connect with nature, but it's also a link to our past: it can bring back memories of Mom's geraniums or Grandma's kitchen garden and her delicious green beans.

Hearing stories from my parents growing up on a farm in the rural south, I'm convinced it planted a seed deep inside me to continue our family legacy of planting, growing, and harvesting.

Our gardens can be living reminders of the people we love. We have peonies in our garden that are from my husband's grandmother's flower beds. This spring, the quince we plant will be in honor of Gram and her legendary quince jelly. The lily of the valley that is just now peeking through the ground are from my mother's flower beds–and it brings me joy to see them come to life each year. When I grow an extra-large tomato, I think of my dad and his prize-winning tomatoes at the county fair.

Gardens are a season of starting fresh, an instructor in the process of life, a calming renewal, and a hope of things to come, but gardens also connect us to our past. Successful gardening for our ancestors wasn’t about having a green thumb or perfect weather. It was tried and true methods–tested, passed down, corrected, and improved upon. Storied Garden can help you create a kitchen garden system that will fit your lifestyle, aesthetics, and budget while providing healthy, organic, delicious food for you and your family. We’ve made the mistakes and survived the fails; let us help you avoid them! We’ll take the work, stress, and overwhelm out of the process so that all you need to do is step out into your garden and enjoy. Whether you’re starting a new chapter of gardening or revising an existing one, we’re here to help you become the confident, successful gardener that would make your ancestors proud.
