WATERMELON
Watermelon –
(sugar baby)
Harvesting –
Timing: Harvest sugar baby watermelons about 75-80 days after planting or when the vine tendrils closest to the melon start to dry out and turn brown.
Color: Check the underside of the watermelon; it should turn from white to a buttery yellow when ripe.
Sound Test: Tap the watermelon with your knuckles; a ripe watermelon will have a deep, hollow sound.
Texture: Feel the rind of the watermelon; it should be hard and resistant to pressure, with a slightly rough texture.
Harvesting: Use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the melon from the vine, leaving about 2 inches of stem attached to prolong freshness.
Storing sugar baby watermelon –
Room Temperature: Store whole sugar baby watermelons at room temperature for up to 1-2 weeks.
Refrigeration: Place whole watermelons in the refrigerator to extend their freshness for up to 2-3 weeks.
Cut Melons: Once cut, wrap the watermelon pieces tightly in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
Avoid Moisture: Keep the cut surfaces of the watermelon dry to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth.
Freezing: For long-term storage, cut the watermelon into cubes and freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring them to a freezer bag. Use within 6-8 months for the best quality.
